NABERS for residential sustainability.

The NSW office of Environment and Heritage outlines the benefits of NABERS for the Australian commercial property industry. NABERS has a gained a reputation as leading the world in the greening of its commercial buildings and tenancies.

NABERS uses a unique approach in measuring the environmental impacts of buildings. A high NABERS Rating is recognised across the property industry as a symbol of sustainability and sound management and is an essential component of the building management cycle.  NABERS ratings allow the business and property owners to demonstrate their commitment to the environment and optimise their triple bottom line being financial, social and environmental outcomes.

Most recently the federal government has announced that NABERS rating tool for apartment buildings. This initiative forms part of the Australian National Energy Productivity Plan’s 2030 targets to achieve a 40% increase in productivity of our national energy usage. The NABERS initiative for residential apartment buildings will assist them in contributing to overall energy efficiency targets. This is good news for the environment as the built environment still contributes almost a quarter of the Australia’s emotions with residential apartments representing the fastest growing market in the built environment.

According to the Australian Property Institute the NABERS Energy for apartment building will embark on its development phase in the coming months with a pilot phase expected to run in 2017. The tool will assess the energy performance of central services, and includes the NABERS Water tool to help occupants of apartment buildings to assess and improve their water performance.
